Summary
Stu's latest update adds account-based backup: your home profile, maintenance history, and records are now backed up automatically so they survive a lost or replaced phone. Accounts are created with an email address and don't change how Stu handles your data: it's still local-first, never sold or shared, and exportable or deletable at any time from Settings.
Until now, everything in Stu lived only on your phone. That was intentional because home data is personal, and we didn’t want a server involved unless it was necessary for the product.
This update adds account-based backup. Every account now automatically backs up your home profile, maintenance history, and records, so a lost or replaced phone doesn’t mean months (or years!) of upkeep history.
What Changed
Stu now requires an account, created with your email. To sign in, we email you a one-time code. No password needed.
Your data still lives on your device first, same as before. The account adds a copy on our servers, scoped to you, so you can restore it on a new phone by signing back in with the same email.
What Didn’t Change
Stu still doesn’t sell or share your data. You can still export your full history as a CSV. And you can delete your account, along with its backup, directly from Settings, whenever you want. Access is blocked immediately, with a 30-day recovery window before it’s permanently and irreversibly deleted, as described in our Privacy Policy.
Why Now
Losing a phone shouldn’t mean losing a home’s maintenance history. Also, we are planning to release new features based on user feedback that require hosted servers, such as sharing your account with household members.
What to Expect
If you’re updating from an earlier version of Stu, you’ll be asked to create an account the first time you open the app after updating. It takes about 20 seconds.
