Why It Matters

Dust on vents reduces airflow into each room, spreads allergens, and forces the system to work harder.

Tools

  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Screwdriver (if registers are screwed in)
  • Microfiber cloth or rag

How to Do It

  1. Start at the farthest register from your air handler and work toward it, so dislodged dust doesn't settle on already-cleaned vents.
  2. Remove each register by lifting it free or unscrewing it, depending on how it's fastened.
  3. Vacuum the inside of the duct opening, reaching as far as the hose allows.
  4. Vacuum both sides of the register cover to pull out embedded dust.
  5. Wipe the register cover with a damp cloth and let it dry before reinstalling.
  6. Snap or screw the register back into place, confirming it sits flush with the wall or floor.
