Why It Matters

Leaves and grass block airflow through the outdoor coil, hurting efficiency and forcing the compressor to work harder year-round. A heat pump's outdoor unit runs through every season, not just summer.

Tools

  • Screwdriver or nut driver
  • Garden hose

How to Do It

  1. Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect switch before touching the unit.
  2. Remove the top grille or panel using a screwdriver or nut driver and set it aside.
  3. From inside the unit, gently spray the fins outward with a garden hose to flush debris through the coil without bending the aluminum fins.
  4. Clear any leaves, grass, or debris from around the base of the unit.
  5. Replace the top grille or panel and secure it, then turn power back on at the disconnect.
