Heat Pump

A heat pump heats and cools the home from a single outdoor unit, running year-round. Keeping it tuned protects the refrigerant system, coils, and defrost controls that both seasons depend on.

Heat Pump Tasks

  • Clean outdoor heat pump unit

Each spring, shut off power at the disconnect, remove the top grille, spray the fins from inside out with a garden hose, and clear debris from the base.

    Once a year, in spring
  • Clear snow and ice from outdoor heat pump unit

After each snowfall, clear drifts from around the unit and knock loose ice off the top and sides by hand; light ice clears during the defrost cycle.

    Once a year, in winter
  • Schedule heat pump tune-up

Book a licensed HVAC technician each fall to inspect refrigerant, clean coils, test the reversing valve, and verify the defrost cycle.

    Once a year, in fall
