Why It Matters

The T&P valve is the tank's emergency safety device. Mineral buildup can cement it shut, and a stuck valve risks tank rupture.

Tools

  • Bucket

How to Do It

  1. Position a bucket under the discharge pipe connected to the T&P valve to catch the water that will flow out.
  2. Lift the valve lever and hold it for a few seconds.
  3. Release the lever. Water should stop flowing completely once the lever is down.
  4. If the valve drips or leaks after releasing, or if the lever won't reseat, replace the T&P valve.
