Replace washer supply hoses
Short answer
Every 3 years, shut off the water, swap the old rubber hoses for braided stainless-steel replacements, and install new washers.
Why It Matters
Rubber hoses degrade and can burst, a leading cause of catastrophic home water damage. Many insurers require braided stainless replacements.
Tools
- Adjustable wrench
- Bucket
Materials
- Braided stainless-steel washer supply hoses (hot and cold)
- Replacement hose washers
How to Do It
- Turn off the hot and cold water supply valves behind the washer.
- Pull the washer away from the wall to access the hose connections at the back of the machine and at the wall valves.
- Place a bucket under each connection to catch residual water, then unscrew the old hot and cold hoses with an adjustable wrench.
- Seat a new washer inside each end of the braided stainless-steel hoses before installing them.
- Hand-thread the hoses onto the washer inlets and wall valves, then snug them with the wrench. Do not overtighten.
- Turn the supply valves back on and check each connection for drips.
