Smoke Detector
Smoke detectors sense combustion in the air and sound an alarm to give occupants time to escape. Keeping them tested, powered, and current protects against silent sensor failure when it counts most.
Smoke Detector Tasks
- Press test button on smoke detectors
Press and hold the test button on each smoke detector until the alarm sounds; do this monthly.
- Replace smoke detector batteries
Each fall, swap the battery in every smoke detector and press the test button to confirm the alarm sounds.
- Replace smoke detector units
Check the manufacture date on the back of each smoke detector; replace any unit that is 10 or more years old.
