Check geothermal loop antifreeze level and pressure

Short answer

Each spring, check the pressure gauges on your geothermal loop pump manifold and call your installer if any gauge reads outside the marked range.

Why It Matters

The loop field only works if the antifreeze solution stays at the right concentration and pressure. A weak mix risks freezing the loop; low pressure signals a slow leak.

How to Do It

  1. Locate the loop pump manifold, typically found near the heat pump unit in a mechanical room or utility space.
  2. Find the pressure gauges on the manifold and note the acceptable range marked on the unit or its label.
  3. Read each gauge and compare its reading to the marked range.
  4. If any gauge reads low or outside the marked range, call your installer rather than attempting to adjust the system yourself.
  5. Schedule this check each spring so any pressure drop from a slow leak is caught before the cooling season begins.
