Why It Matters

Water pooling at the foundation causes cracks, leaks, and over time, structural shifts. Most foundation problems start as drainage problems.

  • Measuring tape

How to Do It

  1. Start at one corner of the house and walk the full perimeter, checking that the soil or grade slopes away from the foundation on all sides.
  2. Look for low spots, sunken soil, or areas where water would pool against the foundation wall.
  3. Locate each downspout and confirm its extension or splash block directs water at least 4 feet from the foundation.
  4. Use a measuring tape if a downspout extension looks short; adjust or replace it if it falls under 4 feet.
  5. Inspect the visible foundation for new cracks, noting their location, orientation, and approximate width for future comparison.
