Why It Matters

A dead thermostat can't run heating or cooling, leaving the home unconditioned at the worst time.

Materials

  • AA or AAA batteries (check your thermostat model)

How to Do It

  1. Check your thermostat model or existing batteries to confirm whether it takes AA or AAA batteries, then have replacements on hand before you start.
  2. Grip the thermostat body and pull it straight off the wall plate; most units unclip without tools.
  3. Remove the old batteries and insert the new ones, matching the polarity markings inside the compartment.
  4. Snap the thermostat back onto the wall plate and confirm the display powers on.
  5. Between annual replacements, watch for a low-battery icon on the display and swap batteries promptly if it appears.
