Why It Matters

Dirty oil loses lubricating properties and shortens engine life. Most small engines hold less than a quart, so it's a 10-minute job.

Tools

  • Drain pan
  • Funnel

Materials

  • Small-engine oil (grade per manual)

How to Do It

  1. Run the engine for a few minutes to warm the oil so it flows more easily when drained.
  2. Shut off the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire, and locate the oil drain plug or fill tube, depending on your mower's drain method.
  3. Tip the mower in the direction specified in your manual, or remove the drain plug, and let the old oil drain completely into the pan.
  4. Replace the drain plug if removed, then set the mower back on level ground.
  5. Reconnect the spark plug wire, then refill with the oil grade and quantity specified in your manual, using a funnel to avoid spills.
