Why It Matters

Leaves and grass block airflow through the outdoor coil, hurting efficiency and stressing the compressor. A choked condenser can shorten the unit's life by years.

Tools

  • Garden hose
  • Screwdriver or nut driver

How to Do It

  1. Turn off power to the unit at the outdoor disconnect box.
  2. Remove the top grille or panel using a screwdriver or nut driver, and set it aside.
  3. Clear leaves, grass clippings, and other debris from around the base of the unit.
  4. From inside the unit, gently spray the fins outward with a garden hose, working around the coil. Avoid bending the aluminum fins.
  5. Replace the top grille or panel and fasten it securely.
  6. Turn the power back on at the disconnect box.
