Why It Matters

A clogged drain backs water up into the air handler, damaging walls and floors. Many systems shut off when this happens.

Tools

  • Wet/dry vacuum (optional)

Materials

  • Distilled vinegar

How to Do It

  1. Turn off the air conditioner at the thermostat before starting.
  2. Locate the condensate drain line access point near the indoor air handler, typically a capped PVC pipe.
  3. Remove the cap and slowly pour one cup of distilled vinegar into the line.
  4. Let the vinegar sit for 30 minutes to break down algae and slime buildup.
  5. Alternatively, attach a wet/dry vacuum to the outdoor end of the drain line and run it for a minute or two to pull out the clog.
  6. Replace the cap and restore power to the system.
