Why It Matters

Dusty blades throw dirt around the room each time the fan runs. Loose hardware can make a fan wobble or, rarely, fall.

Tools

  • Screwdriver
  • Old pillowcase
  • Damp cloth
  • Step ladder

How to Do It

  1. Turn off the fan and let the blades stop completely before touching them.
  2. Slip an old pillowcase over each blade one at a time, then pull it back to capture the dust without spreading it.
  3. Wipe any remaining grime from each blade with a damp cloth.
  4. Tighten the screws that attach each blade to its bracket using a screwdriver.
  5. Check the mounting bracket where the fan connects to the ceiling and tighten any loose screws there as well.
