Clean wall/window AC filter and coils
Short answer
Each spring, pop out the filter, wash it with soapy water, and vacuum the coils with a soft brush attachment.
Why It Matters
A dust-clogged filter and dirty coils kill cooling performance, force the unit to run longer, and raise electric bills.
Tools
- Vacuum with soft brush attachment
- Rag
Materials
- Dish soap
How to Do It
- Remove the front panel or grille to access the filter.
- Pull out the filter and wash it in warm, soapy water. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
- Vacuum the visible evaporator coils using a soft brush attachment, working gently to avoid bending the fins.
- If you remove the unit for winter storage, also wipe out the drain pan and vacuum the outdoor coil before putting the unit away.
