Why It Matters

A detector with a working battery can still have a degraded sensor. Pressing test is the only confirmation the unit will alarm.

How to Do It

  1. Locate each CO detector in your home.
  2. Press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds.
  3. If a unit does not alarm, check its end-of-life date printed on the back or side of the device.
  4. Replace any unit that fails the test or has reached its end-of-life date.
