Why It Matters

CO sensors degrade after ~5-7 years even if the unit still powers on. An expired detector may miss dangerous levels.

Materials

  • Replacement CO detector units

How to Do It

  1. Locate each CO detector in your home.
  2. Remove the unit from its mounting bracket or wall base and flip it over to find the manufacture date label on the back.
  3. If the manufacture date is more than 5 years ago, or beyond the manufacturer's stated lifespan, set the unit aside for replacement.
  4. Install a new CO detector in the same location, following the mounting instructions included with the unit.
  5. Test the new unit using its test button to confirm it powers on and sounds an alert.
