Once a year

Why It Matters

Built-up grease inside the duct restricts airflow and is a fire hazard, especially over gas ranges.

Tools

  • Screwdriver (if filters are screwed in)
  • Rags or paper towels

Materials

  • Degreaser

How to Do It

  1. Remove the range hood filters by unclipping or unscrewing them.
  2. Set the filters aside to clean separately or replace if heavily caked.
  3. Look into the duct opening from inside the hood to assess how long and straight the run is.
  4. If the duct is short and straight, spray degreaser onto a rag and wipe all accessible interior surfaces.
  5. If the duct is long or has bends you can't reach, stop here and hire a professional vent cleaner instead.
  6. Reinstall the filters once you're done.
