Why It Matters

Creosote buildup in the flue is the leading cause of chimney fires. Even occasionally used fireplaces accumulate dangerous amounts.

How to Do It

  1. Book a CSIA-certified chimney sweep each fall, before your first fire of the season.
  2. Ask the sweep to clean the flue of all creosote buildup and to inspect the chimney cap, crown, and flashing for damage.
  3. After the appointment, confirm with the sweep what was cleaned, what was inspected, and whether any repairs are needed before the fireplace is safe to use.
