Inspect roof for damages
Short answer
Each fall, walk the perimeter with binoculars to check for missing shingles, damaged flashing, and granule loss, then call a roofer if you find damage.
Why It Matters
Catching missing shingles, lifted flashing, or cracked vents early prevents leaks that destroy decking, insulation, and drywall.
Tools
- Binoculars
How to Do It
- Wait until fall, when summer heat stress is visible and winter weather is still ahead.
- Walk the full perimeter of your home at ground level.
- Use binoculars to scan the roof surface for missing, curling, or cracked shingles and any areas with heavy granule loss.
- Check the flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for lifting, gaps, or rust.
- Look at the gutters for sagging, separation from the fascia, or an unusual accumulation of granules.
- If you spot any damage, call a licensed roofer to assess and repair it before winter.
