Reseal wood deck
Short answer
Every two years in spring, sweep and clean the deck, let it dry 24-48 hours, then apply sealer or stain with a roller or pump sprayer.
Why It Matters
UV and moisture turn unsealed wood gray, cup, and crack within a few seasons. Sealing extends deck life and prevents rot.
Tools
- Broom or leaf blower
- Garden hose
- Roller with extension pole
- Pump sprayer
- Stiff-bristle brush
Materials
- Deck cleaner
- Deck sealer or stain
How to Do It
- Sweep the deck thoroughly to remove leaves, dirt, and debris.
- Apply deck cleaner according to its label, scrubbing as needed to remove mildew, graying, and old residue.
- Rinse the deck completely with a garden hose and let it dry for 24-48 hours. The wood must be fully dry before sealing.
- Stir the sealer or stain, then load your roller or pump sprayer.
- Apply sealer or stain in the direction of the wood grain, working in manageable sections to maintain a wet edge and avoid lap marks.
- Let the sealer cure fully before returning furniture or foot traffic to the deck, following the product's recommended drying time.
