Why It Matters

A door that doesn't auto-reverse can crush a child, pet, or car. Sensors and force settings drift out of spec over time.

Tools

  • 2x4 board

How to Do It

  1. Lay a 2x4 flat on the ground centered in the door's path.
  2. Press the close button and let the door descend onto the board. The door should reverse immediately on contact.
  3. Remove the board, then close the door again and wave a hand through the photo-eye beam while the door is moving. The door should reverse when the beam is broken.
  4. If either test fails, locate the down-force adjustment dial or screw on the opener motor unit and reduce the force setting by one or two increments, then repeat both tests.
  5. If the door still does not reverse after adjusting the force and confirming the photo-eyes are aligned and unobstructed, have the opener serviced by a qualified technician.
