Clean microwave grease filter
Short answer
Every three months, slide out the metal mesh filter(s), soak in hot soapy water or degreaser, scrub, rinse, dry, and reinstall.
Why It Matters
A grease-saturated filter stops trapping cooking vapors, lets oily mist coat the kitchen, and becomes a fire hazard when grease drips down onto burners.
Tools
- Sink or basin
- Scrub brush or sponge
Materials
- Dish soap or degreaser
How to Do It
- Slide the metal mesh filter(s) out from the slot or track on the underside of the microwave.
- Fill a sink or basin with hot water and add dish soap or degreaser.
- Submerge the filter(s) and soak for several minutes to loosen grease buildup.
- Scrub both sides with a brush or sponge, then rinse thoroughly under hot water.
- Let the filter(s) dry completely before reinstalling. Alternatively, run them through the dishwasher if the manufacturer allows it.
- Slide the dry filter(s) back into place under the microwave.
