Clean window screens
Short answer
Each spring, pop out screens, scrub with soapy water and a soft brush, rinse with a hose, and reinstall dry.
Why It Matters
Dirty screens block airflow, accumulate pollen, and stain the surrounding sill when it rains.
Tools
- Soft-bristle brush
- Garden hose
Materials
- Dish soap
- Screen repair patches
How to Do It
- Starting at one window, pop the screen out of its frame by pressing the release tabs or lifting it from the track.
- Lay the screen flat and scrub both sides with soapy water and a soft brush, working gently to avoid stretching the mesh.
- Rinse thoroughly with a hose until no soap remains.
- Patch any small holes now using screen repair patches before reinstalling.
- Let the screen dry completely, then reinstall it in the frame.
