Clean windows inside and out
Short answer
Each spring, wash windows inside and out on a cool, overcast day using glass cleaner or a vinegar-water mix with a microfiber cloth or squeegee.
Why It Matters
Dirty glass blocks natural light, masks growing problems (cracked panes, failed seals), and accumulates grime that's harder to remove the longer it sits.
Tools
- Squeegee
- Microfiber cloth
- Bucket
Materials
- Glass cleaner or white vinegar
- Water
How to Do It
- Mix your cleaning solution: glass cleaner or a 50/50 vinegar-and-water mix in a bucket.
- Choose a cool, overcast day to work; direct sun dries the solution before you can wipe it, leaving streaks.
- Start with the exterior. Wet the glass with the solution, then draw the squeegee across in overlapping horizontal strokes, wiping the blade after each pass.
- For corners and edges the squeegee can't reach, wipe with a damp microfiber cloth and buff dry.
- Move indoors and repeat the same process on each pane.
- While the glass is clean and visible, check each pane for cracks and look for fogging or a hazy film between the layers, which signals a failed seal.
