Replace window weatherstripping
Short answer
Each fall, peel off old weatherstripping, clean the channel, and press self-adhesive foam or rubber strip into place.
Why It Matters
Worn weatherstripping lets in drafts, raises heating and cooling bills, and admits moisture, dust, and insects.
Tools
- Utility knife or scissors
- Tape measure
- Rag
Materials
- Self-adhesive foam or rubber weatherstripping
How to Do It
- Starting at one corner, peel off the old weatherstripping from the channel around the window frame.
- Wipe the channel clean and let it dry completely so the adhesive bonds properly.
- Measure each side of the window opening and cut weatherstripping to length.
- Press the self-adhesive strip firmly into the channel, working around the frame without gaps or overlaps at corners.
- Close the window fully and confirm it latches without binding.
